Common Skincare Mistakes

Taking care of your skin is important throughout the year. Healthy skin makes us look and feel great, but there are more than few common skincare mistakes many of us make without even realizing it. To ensure your skin stays healthy, make sure to avoid these common issues.

Over Moisturizing and Exfoliating

Keeping skin hydrated and clean is an important part of any skincare routine. However, many people overdo it without realizing it! When it comes to moisturizing, you want to go with quality over quantity. In other words, it can be tempting to really glob on a moisturizer if you don’t think it’s working. Instead of adding more, try to find a creamier moisturizer. When we apply thick layers, it can actually clog our pores. This wastes your moisturizer and suffocates the skin.

The same goes for exfoliating. Everyone wants to have clean skin, but this should be tackled within reason. When it comes to your exfoliation routine, just a dab will you do ya. People tend to think that if their skin isn’t burning by the time they’re done exfoliating that it must not be working. In reality, over-exfoliating can actually damage your skin, causing it to lose moisture and crack. A simple treatment is all you need.

Not Wearing Sunscreen

As Baz Luhrmann once said, “everybody’s free to wear sunscreen.” This is probably the most well-known item on this list, but people still don’t always take the advice to heart. Premature skin aging is directly linked to the amount of sun you get. Even if you’re not at the beach or outside, even if it’s not sunny, applying sunscreen on a daily basis a great way to protect your skin.

UV rays from the sun can do more than just age our skin. They can damage it and lead to serious problems down the line. Keeping your skin covered or applying sunscreen is a great way to avoid unnecessary risks. Again, you don’t have to be outside on a sunny day to feel the effects of the sun’s rays. Driving in your car or even sitting by a window can all result in getting too much sun.

Washing Up the Wrong Way

Believe it or not, the way you bathe could potentially do more harm to your skin than good. For one thing, using water that’s too hot can be extremely harmful to skin. It might be tempting to crank the heat, especially in the colder months, but keep your skin in mind. That’s because the heat can dry out skin and irritate existing issue. This could leave your skin blotchy or red, undoing all of that great skincare work you’ve been doing.

Another important tip is to use the proper kind of soap when washing up. The worst thing you can do is wash skin directly with bar soap. It doesn’t matter how much you paid for that boutique bar, it can still harm your skin. That’s because bar soaps are held together with a sealant that’s really acidic. This acid can kill skin cells and undo all of your carefully thought out skincare routines.
