Handle Summertime Sweat Pittsburgh | Sewickley Spa
It’s hard not to love summer. The picnics, pool parties and ability to soak in some sun are invigorating. But each of these brings something we all dread: sweat. Everyone sweats (and it’s vital to regulating our body’s temperature). But it’s sticky, often stinky and uncomfortable in so many ways. Luckily, by following some simple tips, you can learn to how to handle your sweat and fully take on the summer.

Finding a Good Deodorant or Antiperspirant

Depending on your body’s odor and sweat levels, you’re going to want to invest in either a good quality deodorant or antiperspirant. Before you make a choice, however, you should understand the fundamental difference between these products.

Deodorant is meant to combat body odor. Sweat itself doesn’t actually have a smell. Body odor forms when odorless sweat mixes with bacteria on your skin. Deodorant helps with odor but will not prevent perspiration.

Antiperspirant, on the other hand, stops sweat from forming. It does this through an active ingredient known as aluminum. Depending on your sweat levels, you can purchase normal antiperspirant or a clinical strength variety. If you want to combat both odor and wetness, some companies make products that are combination deodorant and antiperspirant.

Opt for Lighter Fabrics in the Summertime

The type of clothing you decide to wear in the summer not only impacts your style, but also your comfort level. If you want to minimize summer sweat while maximizing comfort, a few breathable fabrics may help:

  • Cotton: A natural material that is famously breathable and perfect for both day and night looks.
  • Linen: This is another popular choice that is used for flowing, loose pants and light tops.
  • Chambray: A perfect alternative to heavy denim, chambray allows you to embrace the denim look without having to sacrifice comfort.
In general, we recommend avoiding synthetic fabrics which impede breathability.

Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.

Our bodies are 60% water, so hydration is necessary for our bodies to function properly. The summer heat causes each of us to sweat a lot of this water out, making it vital to rehydrate. Quantity needed varies by age, weight and activity level, but an easy rule to follow is 8x8. This means eight glasses of at least eight ounces of water per day.
