With Labor Day soon behind us, that old adage is back. Why can’t we wear white after Labor Day? Who made that rule? At Sewickley Spa, we want to help you look and feel your best. That means something different to every single person who walks through our doors. All of us have our own unique style and preferences that shouldn’t be held back by weird style “rules.” Here are a few common faux pas you shouldn’t feel bad about breaking.
This one isn’t strictly adhered to, but someone’s definitely bound to comment (hopefully as a joke) when they see your white jeans in late September. So, why can’t you wear white after Labor Day? This “rule” goes all the way back to the late 1800s. At the time, families with old money resented those who had just come into it—the nouveau riche.
As a way of distinguishing their families’ legacy of wealth, many decided they would not wear white at the end of summer as a way to identify those who recently became rich. In other words, those still wearing white were to be excluded from “high society.” Sounds petty, huh? So, go ahead and wear that cute white dress all winter long
Putting two bold colors together is a definite no-no for many fashionistas, but this rule is going out of style. If you’ve got a colorful flair, you should feel free to pair any colors you’d like. The most common “faux pas” we hear about is pairing blue and brown with black. Sure, an all-black look can be sleek, but sometimes you just need to break it up with a nice pop of color. Darker blues and tans help you achieve this while still maintaining a more subdued look.
There are other color combos that get put in the crosshairs: red and green, yellow and purple, orange and navy blue. All of these pairings can work and you should feel free to do so. Check out some of these stunning examples. As all style and beauty, go with what you like and don’t worry what others think!
Just like with colors, wear whatever patterns and designs speak to you. Mix all the prints you want! In fact, many stylists encourage mixing patterns for a fresh, modern look. They even recommend using leopard print as a neutral and contrasting it with other patterns. Maybe your style’s a little more reserved. That’s perfectly fine, too. Just don’t be afraid to let your penchant for patterns fly whenever you want.
Let’s talk about stripes, too. How many times have you heard that horizontal strips aren’t flattering? This is a tired “rule” that simply doesn’t hold up. Sure, there might be a little bit of visual trickery if you’re wearing a skintight dress, but if you wear clothes that fit your body, you won’t look any wider than you are.
