Family-Friendly Summer Activities | Sewickley Spa

Your kids have a fair bit of remaining time off, and with their endless energy, it’s tough to keep them entertained with just the daily pool visit. Rest assured that there’s no shortage of engaging activities to choose from. On a budget? Try a few of the free events in your community. Okay to spend some cash? Take the kids out for a day trip. Check out a few family-friendly ideas for a day of fun.

Free Family Activities

Family time doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, it doesn’t have to cost anything. Get out into the world, or spend a leisurely evening at home. A few of our picks:

Outdoor Fun
Whether it’s in the front yard or on your favorite trail, get out into the open air! Remember the bygone days of lemonade stands? Help your child make something to sell to the neighbors. Both fun and a lesson in the value of hard work. If that’s not your scene, take the family on a morning hike before setting up camp under the stars. Still more to love, several communities like Hartwood Acres and South Park offer free outdoor concerts.

Farmer’s Market
While you could end up with a few purchases along the way, heading to your local farmer’s market with the kids can still be an inexpensive outing. Some offer free activities, like face painting, crafts or fruit picking. Use the day to simply browse, or take advantage of the freshest produce of the season without grocery store markups.

Game Night
Family game nights have been popular for years, and you can easily establish the tradition at home. If you’re old school, break out a few favorite board games. Tech-savvy families could instead go head-to-head with favorite video games. A heaping bowl of popcorn and a pizza would put it over the top.

Low-Cost Experiences

Somewhere between a day at home and a full vacation, low-cost day trips are fun for the whole family. These activities will keep you fairly local, but provide the feeling of a day away. Top choices:

Amusement Parks
We heard that there was a new roller coaster in Pittsburgh this summer. Pittsburgh area amusement parks offer something for all ages and preferences. Thrill-seeking adults and (height-appropriate) kids alike will enjoy the many adventurous rides, while waterpark adventures often appeal to younger audiences. We’ve got three major parks to choose from, so you won’t be disappointed.

The Zoo
Lions, tigers and bears...There’s something magical about being able to see nature’s majestic creatures up close. Even better, Pittsburgh’s zoo has an aquarium, too! The kids are sure to get a kick out of the waddling penguins, friendly seals and larger-than-life elephants (Cool to see: an elephant taking a bath). Unwind in the learning areas, too, where kids can color and have hands-on fun.

Sporting Events
He swings and misses. We’re at the peak of the MLB baseball season, an activity especially popular with families. Head to PNC Park for a ballgame (and, on Sundays, kid-friendly giveaways and activities). The excitement of the game and the crowd is the perfect opportunity for your child(ren) to get out some energy. Not into baseball? We’ll have exhibition football on the Northside soon, too.
