As Saint Patrick's Day approaches, we thought we’d spend some time exploring popular Irish spa treatments. The Emerald Isle has a rich tradition of combining natural resources and a little Irish ingenuity when it comes to beauty regimens—some of which we’ve even adapted here at Sewickley Spa! Whether you’re a fair-skinned Irish redhead or not, read on for some great ideas. Sláinte!

Thalassotherapy (Seaweed Therapy)

Being an island and all, Ireland boasts almost 2,000 miles of coastline. That means a lot of materials washing up on the beach, especially seaweed. Seaweed is one of Ireland’s favorite spa go-to treatments, and with good reason. There are over 500 kinds of seaweed that can be found along the coast of Ireland. Each contains so many beneficial vitamins, like A, B12, C, B6 and more. It’s also rich with minerals that are good for your body inside and out, like iodine, magnesium, calcium, potassium and copper.

There are various body treatments using seaweed, but detox wraps are especially popular. There are also seaweed baths and facials. The seaweed helps to replenish your body with vitamins, minerals and oils after detox. Seaweed revitalizes cells for a impactful anti-aging effect. It’s also anti-inflammatory so great for sensitive skin.

Irish Beauty Tips

Protecting your skin was always a priority in Ireland. Even if you have a little more color in your cheeks than the average Irish lass, there’s still something to be learned. One quick DIY beauty mask favored in Ireland is made from a finely ground oatmeal and beaten egg whites. Mix up the dough, spread it over your face and leave it to dry. Once dry, gently remove with soft towels wrung out in warm water. If you feel that your skin is greasy afterwards dab or spritz some lemon juice!
